Heavy traffic and some confusion in the home teams timing led to a delayed start and reduced overs for the first round cup game between Seymour Arms and the Pirates. As with our previous games this season the Pirates took to the field with Andrew Gammon (the wicket machine) opening as usual. Although he didn’t get a wicket there was a dramatic run out as the openers went for a quick single, little did they realise that the fielder they picked out was Jonty Rhodes granddad Mark Lavis! Like a young gazelle being chased by a hungry lion he came storming in and with a direct hit it was 0-1! Skipper Andy Waltz chose to bowl down the hill and kept things tight, Gamms returned and trapped the other opener LBW (he was going to appeal but had run out of breath having to run uphill!). Time to mix up the bowling saw the two slow bowlers in Paddy Clarke and Christian Bunney coming on. A good catch on the boundary by Sam Wilmington gave Paddy his first victim of the season, then a real collectors item Bunney almost Graeme Swann like turning it miles to take out middle stump! A small tantrum followed after missed catches and fumbles in the deep by Brett Cole! A few big hits at the end left the Pirates needing 97.
The cards chose Aaron Learninhan and Matt Jones to open and after a big swoosh at the ball Aaron came back to watch with the rest of us! This took Danovan to the wicket (this year minus the deadlocks) and in typical style he was swinging hard! a quick 10 including a big six. Sam and Lavo added a few more before Brett came in to bat in front of his fan club, pressure was on! Pressure got to him and a golden duck followed! Skipper in next soon to be joined by me, (8). Pressure was on for the remaining overs with 8 wickets down and needing 12 an over. But the skipper (36) and Christian (21) soon got about the bowling and the ball was flying over the boundary with ease. The game was wrapped up with the first ball of the last over.
Aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!!
